🛕 Introduction
Nestled high in the Kullu Valley of Himachal Pradesh, Bijli Mahadev Temple is one of India’s most awe-inspiring Shiva temples. At an altitude of about 2,460 meters, it offers not just spiritual peace but panoramic views of the surrounding Himalayan ranges. This destination combines myth, mystery, and majestic nature.
🔱 Mythology Behind the Name
The name “Bijli Mahadev” literally translates to “Lightning Lord Shiva.” According to local legends, every few years, lightning strikes the temple’s Shivling, shattering it into pieces. Astonishingly, the temple priests use butter and sattoo (gram flour) to join it back together — and it miraculously restores itself, symbolizing divine intervention and cosmic power.
🏞️ The Trek and Scenic Beauty
To reach the temple, one has to trek around 3 kilometers uphill from Chansari village, located about 14 km from Kullu town. The trail is moderately challenging but highly rewarding. Surrounded by thick pine forests, apple orchards, and peaceful meadows, the journey feels like walking through a postcard.
From the top, one can witness a breathtaking 360-degree view of the Kullu and Parvati valleys. On clear days, the snow-capped peaks in the distance make the scenery even more surreal.

The temple, built in traditional Himachali wooden style, holds a massive Trishul (trident) that is over 60 feet tall. Devotees believe it absorbs the divine energy of Lord Shiva. The calm and sacred ambiance makes it an ideal spot for meditation and spiritual reflection.
