Manikaran Sahib: A Spiritual Gem in the Himalayas
📍 Introduction
Tucked away in the serene Parvati Valley of Himachal Pradesh, Manikaran Sahib is a sacred pilgrimage site revered by Sikhs and Hindus alike. Located just 4 km from Kasol, this tranquil destination offers not only spiritual solace but also breathtaking views of the Himalayas and the roaring Parvati River.
🕍 Historical and Religious Significance
Manikaran Sahib holds deep significance in Sikh history. It is believed that Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the first Sikh Guru, visited this site around 1574 AD with his disciple Bhai Mardana. According to legend, the Guru miraculously created a hot spring here by lifting a stone to help cook food when Bhai Mardana couldn’t find firewood.
For Hindus, the site is equally sacred. Legends say that Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati meditated here for over 11,000 years. One day, Parvati lost her precious mani (gem) in the river. When Shiva’s followers couldn’t retrieve it, Lord Shiva opened his third eye in rage, and the waters of the spring burst forth.

One of the most fascinating features of Manikaran is its natural hot springs. The water here is so hot that rice and pulses are cooked in it and served as langar (community meal) in the Gurudwara. These geothermal waters are believed to have medicinal properties, attracting visitors who wish to take a dip for spiritual and physical purification.
