🌄 Tungnath Temple – The Highest Shiva Temple in the World

Perched at an altitude of 3,680 meters, Tungnath Temple is the highest Shiva temple in the world and one of the five sacred Panch Kedar temples of Lord Shiva. Located in the serene meadows of Chopta, often referred to as the “Mini Switzerland of India,” it is a paradise for both spiritual seekers and nature lovers.
🛕 Mythological Significance
According to legends, after the Kurukshetra war, the Pandavas came in search of Lord Shiva to seek forgiveness. Shiva, avoiding them, took the form of a bull and disappeared into the ground. His body parts appeared in different locations, forming the Panch Kedar. The arms emerged at Tungnath, giving this temple its unique spiritual importance.
🥾 The Trek to Divinity
The Tungnath trek starts from Chopta and stretches around 3.5 km. It’s an easy to moderate trek, making it accessible even for beginners. Along the way, you’re treated to spectacular views of snow-clad Himalayan peaks like Nanda Devi, Chaukhamba, and Trishul.

- Summer (April–June): Pleasant weather and clear views.
- Winter (Nov–Feb): The temple remains closed, but the snow-covered trek is a delight for snow-trekkers.

- Closing: October/November (Diwali)
- Priests from Makkumath village conduct the rituals.
