Perched at an altitude of 3,050 meters, Kartik Swami Temple is dedicated to Lord Kartikeya, the elder son of Lord Shiva. Situated near the scenic hamlet of Kund, the temple offers panoramic views of the Garhwal Himalayas including Nanda Devi, Trisul, and Chaukhamba peaks.
๐ The Legend Behind the Temple
According to Hindu mythology, Lord Shiva once challenged his sons โ Kartikeya and Ganesha โ to race around the world. Ganesha, with his wisdom, circled his parents symbolizing the universe, while Kartikeya set off on a journey. Impressed by Ganeshaโs devotion, Shiva declared him the winner. In anger, Kartikeya sacrificed his flesh, offering his bones to his father โ symbolizing unmatched devotion.
The temple stands where Lord Kartikeya is believed to have done this penance.
