Perched atop the Observatory Hill in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, the Viceregal Lodge stands as a magnificent reminder of British colonial architecture and history. Also known as Rashtrapati Niwas, this splendid structure was once the summer residence of the British Viceroys of India.
Architectural Marvel
Built in 1888 during the tenure of Lord Dufferin, the lodge showcases Jacobethan-style architecture, with impressive stone walls, wooden interiors, and extensive lawns. Designed by British architect Henry Irwin, the building is not just visually stunning but also structurally advanced for its time—featuring an early fire safety system and electric wiring.
Historical Importance
More than just a summer retreat, Viceregal Lodge was a key political hub. Historic decisions related to India’s partition were discussed within its grand halls. It hosted many prominent leaders including Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, and Muhammad Ali Jinnah.
Now a Research Hub
Today, the lodge houses the Indian Institute of Advanced Study (IIAS). While most of the interior is reserved for scholars, a portion is open to the public through guided tours. The rooms you walk through echo with stories of the past—fascinating for any history lover.
