The Legend of Kamrunag
Kamrunag is named after the deity Lord Kamrunag, a revered local god believed to be the rain god. According to legend, Lord Kamrunag was a warrior who vowed loyalty to Lord Krishna. After the Mahabharata war, he desired to settle in a peaceful, secluded place. He chose this high-altitude lake and has been worshipped here ever since. A small temple near the lake is dedicated to him, and it becomes a major pilgrimage site during the annual Kamrunag Fair in June.
The Trek to Kamrunag
Reaching Kamrunag Lake is an adventure in itself. The trek usually starts from Rohanda village, about 60 km from Mandi town. The trail is a moderately difficult 6–8 km uphill climb through dense deodar forests, meadows, and ridges that offer panoramic views of the Dhauladhar and Pir Panjal ranges. The tranquil surroundings and cool breeze make the effort completely worthwhile.
Mystical Depths and Rituals
The lake is believed to be bottomless, and locals have long held that it hides countless offerings of gold, silver, and coins. Devotees traditionally offer these to the deity during festivals and fairs, tossing them into the lake as a token of faith and respect.
Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit Kamrunag Lake is from May to October. During winters, the lake remains frozen and the region becomes inaccessible due to heavy snowfall. Summer and early monsoon months, especially during the Kamrunag Fair, are ideal for both trekking and cultural immersion.
