Key Monastery Apna Homestay

Tucked away in the breathtaking Spiti Valley of Himachal Pradesh, Key Monastery (also spelled Ki, Kee, or Kye) is a spiritual gem of the Himalayas. Sitting at an altitude of around 4,166 meters (13,668 ft), this centuries-old monastery is a symbol of Tibetan Buddhist culture, resilience, and beauty.

A Glimpse into History

Key Monastery was founded over 1,000 years ago, around the 11th century. Believed to be established by Dromtön, a student of the great teacher Atisha, the monastery has survived multiple invasions, fires, and earthquakes. Despite these challenges, it has stood the test of time, preserving ancient Buddhist manuscripts, paintings, and murals.

Stunning Architecture

Unlike typical monastery structures, Key Monastery resembles a fortress, with clustered whitewashed buildings stacked on top of one another. It’s built in the Pasada style, unique to the 14th century, and its labyrinth of narrow corridors, small rooms, and prayer halls tells tales of the past.

The walls are decorated with ancient Thangka paintings and murals, while the main assembly hall features large statues of Buddha and beautiful religious artifacts.

A Center for Learning and Peace

Key Monastery is not just a place of worship; it’s also a training center for hundreds of Lamas. Monks here engage in prayer, meditation, and learning, continuing the spiritual legacy of Tibetan Buddhism. If you visit during festivals like Cham Dance, you can witness vibrant masked performances and rituals.
