🕊️ St. John in the Wilderness Church – A Hidden Gem in Himachal’s Tranquil Forests

Nestled amidst the tall deodar trees of McLeod Ganj, St. John in the Wilderness Church is more than just a religious site—it’s a tranquil escape into colonial-era history and natural beauty.

📍 Location:

McLeod Ganj, Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh
Located on the way to McLeod Ganj from Dharamshala, this Gothic-style Anglican church is quietly tucked into the wilderness—justifying its name beautifully.

🏰 A Glimpse into History

Built in 1852, the church is one of the oldest in North India. It was dedicated to John the Baptist, and its stone structure, with grey facade and arched windows, showcases Neo-Gothic architecture.

Inside, you’ll find stunning Belgian stained-glass windows—gifted by Lady Elgin, the wife of Lord Elgin, the British Viceroy of India, whose tomb lies in the churchyard.

🌲 Nature’s Embrace

Surrounded by dense deodar forests, the church offers a calm, meditative ambiance. The sounds of chirping birds and rustling leaves replace the usual city buzz, making it perfect for those seeking peace or introspection.
